On October 6, 2018, the Robo Vikes traveled to a competition in Allen, Texas called North Texas Stem Gals. The goal of this competition was to encourage interested young women to pursue STEM careers. STEM Gals is an organization that’s dedicated to the objective of balancing the ratio of women to men in engineering related fields, where men are dominant. Their method involves increasing awareness about STEM careers and encouraging interested women to pursue Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics through presentations and activities. This also includes FRC off-season and seasonal competitions.
During this competition, a different set of rules were structured for the drive team, with the novelty being that the drive team could only consist of females. Our Drive team was led by Adriana Araujo, Maggie Blair, and Christina Cross. This was the first off–season event for the team in the for the 2018-2019 year. While the boys either scouted or assisted in the pit, the girls worked in the pit as well as drove on the field. Despite not being the “normal” drive team, the team did exceptionally well in the competition. They were able to gain points in a quick and efficient manner and that proved the ability of a STEM Gals team. The team’s hard work secured a well deserved ranking, coming in second place. STEM Gals was a tremendous success for us all and I am very proud to be a member of Robo Vikes.
